Sheepskin Tanning w/ Ash Kerby-Miller
In this one day workshop, we'll learn how to use bark (or vegetable) tanning – a traditional, organic technique – to transform raw sheep hides into beautiful, durable, washable sheepskins. Students are also invited to additionally purchase an at home tanning kit. We will cover the science and history of tanning techniques, then get hands-on and work with hides in every step of the process from salting and fleshing, to preparing tanning solutions, to the washing, brushing, and styling of finished sheepskins.
Bark tanning a single hide takes 10+ days with multiple steps. This workshop shortcuts all the waiting time by providing example hides that began tanning days and weeks before class. We'll see and feel how a raw hide transforms from skin into leather, all in the course of a day. Students can then opt to take a salted hide home with them, along with all the specialty supplies and instructions needed to tan it at home.
Space is limited, with registration open through 4/26. Send an $80 deposit by Venmo to @ash-k-m to reserve a spot, and reach out to Ash Kerby-Miller at ashkminvt@gmail.com with any questions.

Forrest is joined by a rag-tag team of makers and movers, and welcomes local Vermont drag/burlesque icons and legends to the SHE ATE stage for one night only, so don’t miss your chance to taste the magic– we promise you’ll be salivating and hungry for more!
ALL PROFITS FROM THIS EVENT TO BENEFIT Out in the Open.
Tickets are sliding scale from $15 available online, and from $20 at the gates. Your $20 ticket most accurately reflects the costs of this production, but tiered options are available to help make the show more accessible to all. Our priority is ultimately bringing the community together at Shepherd Moon Farm and that cost should not be a barrier to anyone’s ability to attend; if this may be the case for you, please contact theforrestfleur@gmail.com and we will accommodate a solution.
Accessibility notes: Ground is uneven, parking is a short walk from where performance is happening. Check back for any further notes about the farm.
Forrest (any pronouns) is a drag artist, farmer, community organizer, and public health researcher currently based in Providence, RI. She has worked across the Northeast in her years doing drag, and made big splashes winning 5 crowns across multiple states. With SHE ATE, she aims to blend her love of nature, passion for visual and performance art, and her academic research in social and behavioral health to create welcoming, safe, and inclusive queer spaces throughout the rural and remote pockets of the region where they tend to be few and far between.
Shepherd Moon Farm lives at the intersection of land stewardship and social justice work. On 222 hilly acres in Central Vermont, we raise sheep, make cheese, and grow community with care, intention, and joy. We believe farming is both a political and creative act—a practice of connection, restoration, and play.

*Disclaimer: our goals for this event are to bring queer people in the community together, and we do not want to bar anyone who may benefit from accessing. If any parents are interested in bringing young queer folks along with them, they are welcome to do so at their own discretion; please note that the drag artists will not be censored or filtered in any manner, so do come expecting adult themes typical of a drag show, including but not limited to (partial) nudity, explicit language, or sexual themes.
